Pangong Lake is stationed at a distance of 160 kms from Leh at an impressive altitude of 14,270 feet above sea level which makes it one of the world’s highest lakes. In order to reach Pangong Lake, we have to pass through one of the highest motorable roads in the world – Chang La Pass stationed at an altitude of 17,688 feet above sea level. Once you reach near to the lake, you will be mesmerized by the white shore, crystal blue shades of Pangong and the dry robust peaks of great Himalayan mountains. On the way to Pangong Lake, there are several points from where you can enjoy the awe-striking vistas of Ladakh and the serene Pangong Tso Lake.

    Flora and Fauna at Pangong Tso

    Pangong Tso Lake is nestled between the land and the great Himalayas that is why the lake is always blessed with plenty of water as the water never diminishes or flows anywhere. You will be amazed to know that Pangong Lake is alkaline in nature due to which you will not see any vegetation or aquatic life in the lake. However, you may see a few migrating birds playing on the shores and on the lake surface. Here, you can see rare migrating birds like Black Necked Cranes, Seagulls and Rodents which are common here. Along with this, you may witness some scrub and herbs growing around the lake.

    Where to Stay at Pangong Tso Lake?

    Being positioned close to the Indo-China border, all the visitors and tourists need to have certain documents in order to explore Pangong Lake. Here, in order to visit Pangong Lake, you need to take permission from the DC office in Leh for the Inner Line Permit that allows Indians and Protected Area Permit that allows International clients to explore Pangong Lake under a specific time frame and only till a specific area. Here, if you want to spend some time at the lake, you may set up your camp for a limited time frame as the lake is close to the international border.

    When it comes to staying, do not get afraid as there are plenty of options where you can stay and spend a few nights close to the Pangong Lake. The nearest village to the lake is Spangmik Village where you can find few options to stay and food. There are some locals who run homestays and provide meals which you may explore. Along with this, there are few options of eco-huts and budget hotels where you can relax and spend a few nights. Pangong Lake and nearby areas are blessed with splendid vistas and picturesque landscapes which will remain in your heart forever.

    Best Time to Visit the Pangong Lake

    The whole region of Ladakh receives heavy snow-fall in the winters and at some places temperature goes down to -50 degrees Celsius. Hence, the best time to visit Ladakh and Pangong Lake is during the summer months of May to October as the temperature remains pleasant in the daytime. However, during the winters, complete regions get covered with a dense white layer of snow and Pangong Lake freezes completely.

    So, the best time to visit Ladakh and Pangong Lake is during the summer months.
